Just outside the Herbert’s front door is the third-largest shopping area in the United States, and home to the largest department store west of New York City. Surrounding the park square are major department stores including Nordstrom, Macy’s, and Bloomingdales, while luxury stores such as Shreve, Tiffany’s and Chanel provide elegance.
The cable cars of San Francisco are one of the world’s most unique systems of public transportation. Built as the best solution to tackle the city’s famous hills, the cable cars have been effectively transporting people since the late 1800s. You can catch the Mason-Powell cable car line at the lower end of Powell Street, just a five-minute walk from the Herbert.
Chinatown is the quickest trip you will ever make to Hong Kong’s present and past. A residential area includes authentic markets and fantastic, inexpensive restaurants. The community itself was formed after thousands of Chinese immigrated to the United States in the 1800s searching for a better life. With colorful markets and unique shops, Chinatown is full of surprises.
San Francisco’s “Little Italy” is the place to enjoy Italian fare at one of the many sidewalk cafes that line Columbus Avenue. Long the center of Italian life in San Francisco, North Beach was also the center of the “Beat” culture of the 1950s.
GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE
This landmark defines San Francisco. The gateway where the Bay meets the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate Bridge has established the boundary to riches for people throughout history. Opened in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge joins San Francisco to Marin County. There are great views of the bridge from Pier 39, a cable car ride away from the Herbert Hotel.
SAN FRANCISCO MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is closed until early 2016, as the building undergoes a major expansion to accommodate the Fisher Collection, a trove of art from modern American Masters including Calder, Stella, Lichtenstein, and Warhol. In the meantime, art enthusiasts may wish to visit the DeYoung Museum, located in Golden Gate Park, or the Legion of Honor, located in the Presidio.
